Indie Monday: Interview with Steve Verreault from Twilight Games
Posted by Nick Kojima on September 8th, 2008 in Features

We know Twilight Games for their lovely titles like Aargon Deluxe, Space Taxi 2 and Jump Jump Jelly Reactor. The studio began in Montreal, Canada back in 1999. Today, the comapany is truly international, with its members working and collaborating from different countries through the Internet. Yet, despite all those developments, it still retains its [...]

Indie Monday: Back to School
Posted by Nick Kojima on September 1st, 2008 in Features

It’s that time of the year again! All right, I agree that the commencement of a new school semester may not be as festive as I’m making it sound, but there are still many reasons to be happy. Here are some excellent substitutes for homework:

Indie Monday: Toribash
Posted by Poh Tun Kai on August 25th, 2008 in Reviews

We take a step away from casual games and into the indie realm with Toribash, a violent 3D fighting multiplayer game with some very involved controls. It’s a game that takes a lot of effort to master, but is also extremely rewarding once you get the hang of it.
Toribash is the creation of Singapore-based Nabi [...]

Laser Dolphin
Posted by Poh Tun Kai on July 17th, 2008 in Reviews

Don’t mess with Flipper. He’s got a laser, and he’s not afraid to use it. That’s the simple and yet incredibly appealing idea behind Laser Dolphin, an arcade-action game that gives you shooting, swimming and jumping activities across the oceans of 4 worlds, on a mission to save the Prime Minister from aliens, somehow. Just [...]

Eschalon: Book I
Posted by Nick Kojima on June 14th, 2008 in Reviews

Lets get this out of the way right now – this is not a “casual game” in the sense of the word most of us have come to accept. No jewels are matched, no diners are dashed, no mysterious cases are… filed. Eschalon is a tile-built, turn-based RPG game in the classic sense of the [...]

Battles of Norghan
Posted by Cameron Sorden on December 5th, 2007 in Reviews

All too often people make the mistake of assuming casual and indie games are all simple and showy and lacking in any depth. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard my “hardcore” gamer friends dismiss a title just for being casual. Well, Mitorah’s game, Battles of Norghan, is a swift kick to the teeth [...]

Fizzball
Posted by Nick Kojima on November 30th, 2007 in Reviews

You know, every time I talk to developers and reviewers about video games, I hear the same old story: “Innovation is dead in games.” These people haven’t been looking at the top indie casual games lately. Little gems like Fizzball, Wik, and Eets come out with shocking regularity. They get a lot of hype on [...]

Wik & the Fable of Souls
Posted by Nick Kojima on November 8th, 2007 in Reviews

If you haven’t heard of this game already, it’s because you haven’t been paying attention. At the 2005 Independent Games Festival it won best overall game, best visuals, and best innovation in a game design. And it deserved all of those awards - and more besides. It’s a truly great game.

Zzed
Posted by Nick Kojima on October 20th, 2007 in Reviews

This game has been lingering on the shareware boards and independent game sites a long time. It maintains it’s presence with a loveable sort of naiveté and fresh design that you just can’t help but like a little bit, even if the whole premise of the game is patently ludicrous.
