Nearly every boy that I have ever known has at one time or another wanted to be a fighter pilot. Whether it’s in the first history class that they learn of the Red Baron or when they see the combat footage from WWII fighters, eventually, they all want to be in that fighter plane, feeling the adrenaline pumping as they dodge machine-gun rounds from numerous enemy planes.

Enter stage left, WWII Pacific Heroes; a game of fast-paced arcade style combat both as a fighter pilot and also as an AA gunner. The camera is either a chase cam behind the various planes that you will be flying, or in a first-person view where you man the AA guns. The missions are standard fare for something like this. In some of them you will be protecting allies; in others you’ll be attacking enemy ships and planes. The developers mixed things up pretty well. They also put in a couple different planes for you to experience.

The sound is adequate, and while it doesn’t really add anything to the experience it has a solid enough performance to not take anything away from the game. The visuals are nice both in the game and between missions. While you are out on missions the developers really got a break with the amount of detail that they could put in the planes and ships. Since you’ll be fighting mainly over open ocean the ground doesn’t eat up valuable memory. More detail has been put on both the enemies and allies that are doing the fighting.

I certainly enjoyed the game, although there were two areas that I stumbled on a bit: The first was the sensitivity of the controls. The default controller is the mouse which controls how the plane or AA gun move. I found that I had to turn the mouse sensitivity all the way down before I felt comfortable. Now, this might just be my age showing, but I like to think that I still have a couple good years left before I can’t use a mouse anymore.

The other point of concern was the first mission. I was supposed to defend some troop transports from an enemy air attack. It seemed simple enough, but it took me literally six tries to complete it, and it was just the first mission! Maybe I was getting used to the sensitive controls, maybe it was just my inexperience with the game in general, and maybe the difficulty on the first mission is out of whack. The subsequent missions have a much more progressive and even difficulty setting, though, so I recommend that you not judge the game’s difficulty from the first mission.

Overall, I did enjoy the game quite a bit. Once I got past that first mission, I had lots of fun and especially enjoyed sitting back and watching the great visuals. If you’ve ever had an urge to hop into the pilot seat and take to the skies, try it out and give WW2 Pacific Heroes a download.
