Top down shooters are all about dodging enemy projectiles and making sure the enemy doesn’t dodge yours. At the end of the day, those narratives about great wars and piloting giant Japanese robots are merely façades made to hide that similarity between all shooters that have ever existed. Once you rip that pretence away, what remains is a deep, core action game that is T.W.T.P.B.
Saying that T.W.T.P.B. lacks a detailed, scrolling war-torn background and a huge, menacing spider-droid boss doesn’t mean the game suffers in visuals. On the contrary, simplicity makes this game, and I’ll explain why. It’s been proven: action gamers love glowing things, and we are naturally attracted to anything that glows green and stay frightfully away from anything that emits a remotely red light. Combine that with beautiful fractal-like imagery, and you have a winning formula that triumphs in its elegant minimalism. This is exactly what T.W.T.P.B. does.
Gameplay-wise, this game generally plays true to arcade shooters – enemies shoot tons of projectiles at your ship and you navigate hastily through that deadly maze, awaiting a chance to shoot back at your foes. The control of this game is straightforward: you move the ship by moving your mouse and hold left-click to fire. What is interesting about this game is that unlike typical arcade shooters, your specials (which are activated by the right mouse button) don’t just clear the screen. Specials aid you positively in one way or another, but never have a direct effect on the enemies on screen – they speed up your attack, heal you, or slow enemy projectiles down. You can cycle through these specials once you’ve unlocked them by using the mouse wheel, and they add a whole new dimension to the game.
Sounds in this game work, but are really nothing to call home about. T.W.T.P.B. sports the usual background music and effective sound effects for bullet hits. The execution of sound is simple and seamless, very much complimenting the visuals of the game.
In conclusion, this game is an excellent purchase for fans of arcade shooters who are just into the pure ecstasy of dodging an enormous pool of projectiles and emerging victorious against hordes of enemies. The game is easy to pick up for beginners due to the simple controls but only if you are willing to ignore the lack of a deep, engaging storyline. For its price, this game offers all the excitement of an intense arcade shooter that leaves a strangely relaxing aftertaste.
