Here’s a game that displays that odd design sensibility: “I’ve got this big pile of fairies lying around – I think I’ll just put them all over this game!” So if you like that, this is your kind of game. What’s the story? The story is you’re filling shapes in. Because stuff is better filled in. And there are fairies. Who will… watch, I guess.
The “Stacker” mode of the game was an interesting and welcome twist. Instead of just filling in a static shape, you fill in a large shape that falls apart as you keep filling it, gradually dropping a picture of a fairy onto the screen. This is pretty fun – though I wished the shape had been a bit bigger. Also, I couldn’t tell if matching colors was getting me any real bonuses, and I hoped it was. If it was, then it should have been more obvious.
The music and sound weren’t great. They’re a little on the cheesy side and sound a bit too much like other standard puzzle games. Some more variety would have been nice.
Buying things is a neat feature here. Cool special abilities to get, and it was a very nice touch how the bought things added to the power of the special abilities, so I didn’t get a bunch of new stuff I never used – I got the same stuff but better.
I have to admit, something deep down inside of me really loves everything Puzzle Lab does. There is something about this team that has a fresh, optimistic, and originally beautiful take on the world that comes across in all of their games. Sure, they’re not always as polished as some of their higher-budget competitors, but polish is not the only thing that makes a game. Give this one a look if you’re in the mood for some pretty and entertaining gameplay.
