Here’s a game that might actually change children’s attitudes when it comes to cleaning up their room. Graduate Games has just released The Magic Toy Chest, a game inspired by the classic puzzle series, “The Incredible Machine”, featuring similar mechanics and educational value found in the decade-old title. It’s a nostalgic return for fans of this particular game concept, and an entertaining one revived for those who were too young (or not born yet) then to have experienced it.

The premise of the game is simple: each level features a messy room with various toys and gadgets positioned within a platform layout. Your objective is to tidy the place up by returning certain goal items to the toy chest for keeping. Each level begins in a “planning” state, where you’re able to add additional toys to the level and position them in spots which you think can would help you achieve your goals. Then, once you’re ready, the various toys within the level will start to interact with each other.

For example, you might have to toss alphabet blocks at baseballs so they roll down slopes and knock a teddy bear into the toy chest. Or, you might have to fire your orange plug gun at a stack of dominoes to topple them over for keeping. There is no single way to solve the puzzles — you have the freedom to use the toys you’re provided as you like and make use of the pre-placed toys in the level to achieve your objective.

While The Magic Toy Chest isn’t particularly novel in concept or impressive in the visual aesthetic, it still does a fine job at presenting a game that’s playable by the whole family. Its controls are incredibly simple — the left-mouse button alone is all you’ll ever need, and understanding how the game functions is rather intuitive, as players can easily relate to and make assumptions for the objects they encounter in the levels. Not only that, a level editor is included, which provides the opportunity to exercise your creativity. The game is definitely one worth experiencing if you have never tried anything from “The Incredible Machine” series before.
