It’s great to see that with so many new casual games there out there, there are still developers paying tribute to timeless classics. One of the most famous gaming platforms rests on table tops all over the world – the common deck of cards. Developers of Spyde Solitaire has taken this idea and breathed new life into the common game of Spider Solitaire and given it a very classic look to boot.
Gameplay wise, Spyde Solitaire plays almost exactly like Spider Solitaire. The levels start off very easy, with just 1 suite to introduce you to how the game works. The levels get really hard as more suites are introduced and you’ll have to clear the cards by arranging them to their ranks and suite.
This is possibly where the similarities end. In Spyde Solitaire, you get power ups to help you get out of ruts and dead ends. You’ll get to add an additional free cell, in cases where you’ve used up all of your cells and need to stack your cards somewhere else. This free cell is only a temporary effect, because once you remove your cards from it, the cell disappears. Also, you’ll get to push a card back up its deck if you want to. You’ll also get to destroy cards that stand in your and send them back to their other un-dealt friends, where they belong. You’ll have a choice of 3 different rulesets which differ in difficulty level. They are: Normal rules, Mr Spyde, and Turbo Spyde.
There are also so many gameplay modes available you’ll be spoilt for choice! Apart from just Spyde Solitaire and Classic Solitaire, you can choose to play online with other people in Online mode. Choice mode allows you to customize your gameplay from a section of 6: Mister Spyde, Turbo Spyde, Single-suited Spyde, Double-suited, Spyde, and Four-suited Spyde.
Unfortunately, it will be difficult if you want to bring a new friend into the game because he/she will have to register online, or risk having all their progress deleted once they exit the game in Guest mode. That is probably the only irk I have with the game. All play modes, be it Spyde Solitaire, Classic Solitaire, Online and Choice mode, you’ll still need to make a registration online, to make it possible for you to play their online head-to-head games.
One thing I absolutely love is the music in the game. I’m a big jazz/swing music fan, so I really cranked my speakers up for this one. Each incorrect move or accomplishment in the game will cause a musical reaction in the game – be it from the piano or the saxophone, which is a fresh change from the usual choice of sound effects. The cards look like they came out of the early 19th century, with the monocled men and their top hats.
This game gets plenty of mileage from its many game modes. The plus side is being able to challenge other players online (but then why is it still called Solitaire?) whenever you’ve grown tired playing alone.
