With casual games, there’s really no telling what the developers will think of next. There are the normal themes developers will stick to such as the usual fairies, aquatic creatures, restaurants/diners, deep space and what-have-yous. Sheeplings decided to take the scenic route and put you in the shoes of a sheep dog instead.
In this game, you are to herd flocks of sheep into various areas – pens, grazing plots or even protect them by keeping enemies like wolves at bay. The only arsenal you’ve got is you bark, which IS mightier than your bite.
What I liked about this game is its levels. The levels are well laid out and it is fun herding the sheep from point to point and collecting hidden tokens along the way. There are no indicators to show you which parts of the map are destructible, so a lot of times you’ll find it through exploration or trial and error.
The one thing that bogged this game down is its game mechanics. The gameplay involves pushing and leading the sheep to a designated spot on the map, or barking at them to get them to move in a direction you want it to. It does not quite have enough suspense, thrill or excitement to give it a lot of mileage. I think what failed to translate across was caused by how little control I had over the sheep. The strange pathfinding sometimes made the sheep scatter where you don’t want it to. This made what was meant to be challenging cross the line into being frustrating instead.
What pulls this game through is its adorable graphics. Who wouldn’t fall in love with such adorable sheep and dogs? The sounds are simple enough, and sufficiently good to back up gameplay. I liked the controls for this game as it felt quite responsive and it allowed you to control your dog character well.
With a little bit of tweaking and fixing, Sheeplings could stand to be quite a noteworthy game. As it is, it will satisfy any need for a gamer who’s tired of the more common genres.
