I loved sliding puzzles when I was a kid, those little plastic moving squares you’d buy as souvenirs and take with you on trips. I never thought it could translate well into a computer game - but here comes Rooms: The Main Building, a strange title for a strange but curious game.
In Rooms, you control a character who finds herself transported into a world where the rooms are all mixed up. To find your way through, you slide the room where you are in (left, right, up, or down, depending on the available space) until you can get your character into the exit. To make things complicated, they’ve added walls, locked doors, ladders, teleporters, wardrobes that swap, and more. As you make your way through each room, you also find items that can help you in your journey. As a bonus, the game comes with its own level editor so you can create your own sliding puzzles, too.
The art in this game is as unconventional as the puzzles (for instance, your character is a real person - it’s nifty to see her interact with objects). But the graphics also mean confusion. The unconventional UI makes it difficult to do otherwise normal things, like access your inventory or even close a help window. Small text and items can make the game difficult for people with not-so-good eyesight. Also, some parts of the game don’t fit in the world, like the obvious Matrix telephone teleporter complete with green code - we wish there was more coherence in a game that was otherwise very rich in art.
All in all, this game is strange, we can tell you that - but when was the last time you played a truly unique game? Probably not recently. So download this and try it out, then tell us what you think. “Strange” might just be another word for “brilliant”.
