We love mushrooms. Love ‘em. Like them in our burgers, on our pizzas, in our pasta and more. But in Mushroom Age, these little fungi take over the world, and we’re not really sure if we like the taste of that. Read on to find out why.

In Mushroom Age, you travel through time looking for your fiance, Tom, a scientist who is trying to save the human race from evolving into mushrooms. In the first hour you will meet wacky characters, starting with Professor Einbock (who looks like Einstein but isn’t), a messy Nostradamus, talking dinosaurs, and a naked Socrates. Throughout your journey you will find hidden objects in a scene, usually faded into the background or hiding behind an interactive object (such as cabinets or large stones). Interactive objects sparkle so you shouldn’t have to guess, though later levels get so difficult you’ll be randomly clicking around to find things. Like any other hidden object game, there are periodic mini-games such as playing Hangman to guess a password, or moving criss-cross lines around until none of them overlap. None of these really fit within a “theme”, and feel more like random things you can put in a game rather than a cohesive whole.

While there’s nothing unique about the hidden object gameplay, this game does stand out as being Very Strange. The character appearances and animations are weird and the dialogue is quite unbelievable (and the voice acting atrocious). The scenes themselves challenge your maturity, such as being asked to clean a dinosaur’s mouth with a makeshift toothbrush, or traveling through time by dialing contacts on your mobile phone. Time travel itself is depicted as going through some kind of intestine. Nothing really makes any sense, and maybe it’s not supposed to.

If you compare Mushroom Age to other hidden object games (especially the new ones), this one lacks polish and cohesiveness. But this game is also insanely popular, so maybe people are tired of all these other games that take themselves too seriously. You tell us - try this game and see if it works for you. At the very least, you’re sure to have a few laughs.
