This game kicks off with a few newspaper headlines detailing how your character, Tricia might be insane. You see, Tricia supposedly believes that her grandma left their family treasure buried somewhere on a deserted island, instead of keeping it in the safety of a vault like other people would. And instead of leaving Tricia with the vault combination code, good ol’ grandma left her with a treasure map instead. Good going gramps!
At first glance, High Seas may seem like another match-3 game, but after playing it a while I began to realize the amount of depth this game actually has. This may make the game a little slow and hard to get into at the beginning but there are hints that will pop up occasionally that help you understand the game better. You are given a map partially filled with geometric-looking gems. The gameplay involves matching these gems together by sliding their rows horizontally across until you get a line of 4 or more similar pieces; think the Rubic’s Cube. More gems will continually drop, adding more rows, and if you don’t clear the gems at the bottom fast enough, the rows will stack right to the top and you’ll lose the round. By clearing several rounds, you move from one island on the treasure map in the game to another.
As you progress, you’ll learn that you have more ways of matching the gems – either by similar shapes or color. What makes this game different from other games of similar genre is the fact that you get to slide the gems around as they fall, so there’s quite a bit of strategy involved because you get to decide how the gems are arranged in a row. Power ups come from the combos you get, and they’ll help you eliminate some of the gems from your stacks.
I liked how the sharp and polished 2D graphics in the game were give a slight 3D-ish look with drop shadows on the ship and some other objects. The colors are bright, lending a whimsical feel to the game. The background music in this game is looped over and over again though.
If you’re really into puzzle games, I reckon you’ll enjoy High Seas. I’m personally not enthusiastic about puzzles, but I found myself hooked on this.
