Farming Frenzy is a real piece of work with plenty of real solid click-management and arcade elements. It’s the sort of game that makes you rethink a genre believed to have no more new room for re-creation.

What you’ll be doing is popping farm animals into the center of your screen, which works as your main playing field. You won’t really have to worry much about placement and positioning in this game – all you have to do is be quick with your mouse to plant grass for your geese to feed on, grab their eggs fresh just as they are laid, send some off to the powder plant, or just truck them off to the town for some cash. This simple play system is what makes it so appealing. It’s easy to learn, yet is plenty of intensive, addictive fun.

Progression in the game depends on completing the goals required of the level – obtaining ten eggs and ten cakes for example. If you’re the sort of player who loves to go for the challenges, you’ll really enjoy working hard for the “gold” or “silver” awards, which really put your time-management skills to the test, because these awards need you to complete those levels in record time. Not only that, these time figures have been very precisely set, so much so that I found myself missing “Gold” on two occasions by just 4 seconds.

There are upgrades and purchases as you would expect from a farming management game. The downside is that while they do add some decision-making challenge in the area of level preparation, you’ll be annoyed to discover some levels have very strict building criteria. You see, when we finish a level, it’s a natural phenomenon to be excited and ready for the next one. But here, there will be times (and quite a few) where you can’t play the next level just yet, because you’re lacking a particular building or upgrade. If you don’t the money to purchase them, then sadly, you’re just going to have to replay an old level once more to get that cash. Personally, this intended feature ended up being a little frustrating.

With regards to artwork and sound, Malesta totally exhibits exceptional understanding of the “casual” mood. Light-hearted, cheery visuals and bouncy fun music will keep that smile on your face throughout the game. Also, there’s really no story in this game. But honestly, while a captivating story sometimes add plenty of value to a play experience, some games are just way better without it than with a little of it.

This game had a great look. I loved the bears! But everything felt sort of slow to me. Did anyone else think that?
