Deep Voyage begins with a sequence reminiscent of The Little Mermaid: you are a beautiful mermaid with a faithful aquatic friend, exploring the underwater kingdom for treasure. But unlike Ariel with her cave of treasure, your goal in this game is to use what you find to make a beautiful garden for a royal gardening competition.

To find treasure, you play a series of Match-3 games, where you click on groups of three or more icons to clear the tiles under them. Just like other games in the genre, it has locked/double-locked tiles, bombs, and obstacle tiles, but they’ve added some pizzazz. We really enjoyed the directional bombs (vertical, horizontal, and diagonal); setting them off was like lighting a cool fireworks display!

After every few levels, you’ll get to add things to your garden. If you’ve played Fishdom, this is similar to the “build an aquarium” feature, but here you can’t choose what items to add, or remove something you’ve added. We’d prefer having more freedom to upgrade our garden, though the graphics are beautiful and the fish are fun to interact with.

Deep Voyage also throws in two fun things to the usual mix. First is the Puzzle Mode, where you un-jumble an underwater photo like a jigsaw puzzle. The catch is there’s no “guide” photo, only a watermark underneath each piece as a clue - it’s hard to see, but makes the puzzle more challenging, too. The second cool thing is the Powerup Shop, where you can use tokens you’ve collected across levels to buy “powerups” or special skills. With eight powerups (such as Bombardment, Reshuffler, and Pieces Eliminator), each with three upgradable levels, Deep Voyage has no shortage of gameplay hours.

Even with all its detail, Deep Voyage isn’t hard to play at all. In fact, we found it much easier and more relaxing than the other usual games in the market. The calming music, subtle sound effects, and pretty underwater environment are just right. It’s this balance that makes it such a great game, clever enough for pros but easy enough for newcomers to try it out. Download it now and have fun!
