Ever wished there were more people who played your favorite board games with you? Well, here’s an alternative: why not play against the computer? It has an excellent memory of the achievements you obtained playing the game, is a challenging opponent, and supplies a rich multimedia experience on top of the classic gameplay you know and love. One such digital remake is Clue Classic. It is the traditional game of Clue (known outside North America as Cluedo) with a dash of computer game goodness.
The game follows strictly to Clue rules. In case you need a recap, the game begins with a sealed envelope, containing three cards: A card containing the identity of the murderer, the murder weapon and the location the crime took place. The goal of the game is to correctly guess the contents of envelope by process of elimination. Before the game begins you are required to select one of 6 characters to play with, and are dealt 6 cards. You roll two dice to determine how far you can walk a turn, and upon entering a room, you can make a suggestion regarding the murder containing a character, a weapon and the current room you are in. The other computer controlled characters will in turn attempt to show you a card matching that suggestion. Once a match is made, the next player gets his or her turn. The game goes on until one player correctly guesses the contents of the envelope.
Graphics-wise this game is simple and effective, exhibiting the mood of a stereotypical horror mystery film. There are a lot of visual effects in the form of comic book like stills, especially during the processes of entering a room and making a suggestion. The artwork is well drawn and stylistic using rich colors and subdued lighting that further accentuates the mysterious feel of the game. All in all, well deserving of the 4 star score.
Gameplay-wise this game follows the rules of Clue closely, which is proven and fun but doesn’t offer anything new to Clue players. What did make me smile here was the achievements section of the game. You get an award for completing a game as each of the six characters, and also an escalating player rank ranging from a Cadet to Chief Inspector. This feature gives a good and entertaining excuse to play the game for long hours.
As you might have already noticed, the story begins the same for every new game, and has several variable endings according to the contents of the sealed envelope. While this might be refreshing for a while, its repetitiveness quickly dawns on you, hence the 3 star grade on this department.
Sounds are excellent for this game. They are simple, and effective in setting the mysterious and mildly disturbing mood of this game (well, it is about murder). There are soft sound effects when murder weapons are selected that suggests the way they were used (wink), and the how-dare-you-accuse-me gasps of characters when you select their portraits to suggest they were the murderers. Excellent and definitely entertaining.
Conclusively, this is an entertaining take on a classic game. Download this game now and see how much life a monitor screen can inject into that dusty board game in your closet.
