A lot of times a lot of casual games are not given a chance simply because of how they look. Bullet Candy might not immediately strike a chord with gamers but it will quickly prove you wrong.
I must admit that when I first booted up the game, Bullet Candy hardly made an impression with its simple front page and non-elaborate UI style. Once in-game however, I was caught off guard at how intense the battle system was! The game developers of Charlie’s Games were probably inspired by hit arcade shooter Geometry Wars because it works almost exactly the same.
In Bullet Candy, your starship fires automatically. You control the direction in which it moves with standard WASD controls and the crossfire with the mouse. The first few levels are easy, with the objective of the game always the same – to collect all the tokens on screen. However, the real rush happens when you increase in level and the waves of enemies increase dramatically, turning the whole battlefield into a frenzy of zipping bullets and colors.
What makes this game challenging is the intuitive enemy AI. Each enemy plane behaves and reacts differently to your ship. This requires you to constantly strategize and plan which enemy to take down first and lessen the rain of gunfire on you.
Although this game lacks the polished finish most casual games these days have, it does not make it any less of a well designed, exciting game. Once you get into it, you’ll abandon all expectations and get so carried away with the gameplay! The sound effects are nothing out of this world, as the soundtrack consists of techno electronica music and laser zap sound effects which after oh, about a couple of hours into the game can get a tad grating.
