An army of insect overlords is descending from outer space! All that stands between earth and a horde of creepy-crawly monstrosities is a little white ship piloted by none other than you, space fighter extraordinaire! Have you got the moxie to rock the bugs?
Bugatron Worlds is a fun space shooter in the vein of arcade classics like Galaga and Galaxian. Bugs fly onto the screen in line formation and then start floating back and forth while taking shots at you. Avoid the enemy fire, blow up all the bugs, and you win. It’s a tried and true concept with proven appeal. There are a few things that make this game better than its predecessors, though.
First, the graphics. They’re absolutely wonderful! Retro64 has designed cute and lively bugs that zip all over the place, and when they first appear on-screen you’ll often feel like you’re wearing 3D glasses since they zoom directly at your face. Second, the gameplay is incredibly diverse. Using wrecking balls attached to your ship as a weapon, inflating enemies until they pop, and bugs that can only be killed by bouncing environment obstacles (like giant floating eyeballs) into them are just some of the features that demonstrate the raw creativity oozing out of this game.
If only they would show that amazing creativity sooner. The first 17 levels play basically like “generic space shooter x”, and then suddenly you start seeing all the cool and zany stuff every level. Unfortunately, that’s 7 levels after many people will get bored with the demo. There’s also the annoying issue of enemy bullets being difficult to see sometimes because there’s just so much going on.
All said, Bugatron Worlds is a really fun and entertaining shooter that the whole family can enjoy. It’s definitely worth a download if you like this genre at all. Just make sure to play through the first 20 levels before you make a decision, and you’ll see what really makes Bugatron Worlds worthy of a permanent spot on your bug-blasting hard-drive.
