Shoot cannons at an invading armada of ships, destroy incoming cannonballs and raiders, keep your castle walls from falling… what’s not to like? And you do all of this by simply clicking your mouse. For having such simple gameplay, Battle Castles is surprisingly fun.
In each stage, you have to defend your castle against incoming ships. You fire cannonballs at them, they fire them back at you. You simply click where you want the cannonball to fire. The levels ramp up in difficulty at a nice pace. There is a decent variety to the types of ships and their behaviors as they attack. Further levels can become quite hectic. The art is fairly bland, not as polished as it could be, but it isn’t bad. And usually you’re so busy trying to blast ships out of the water and cannonballs out of the sky, you don’t have time to be distracted by anything else.
The game calls for a cool head and a steady hand on the mouse. Between levels you will get a breather, and can repair walls, add guns, and buy powerups to fight the next wave. This dynamic creates the “one more level” feel critical to making an arcade game addictive, and before long your demo will be over, and you’ll be pulling out the credit card to kill a few mor pirates. And that’s a good thing.
Battle Castles stands out in the sea of casual game titles as a game that is actually fun and easy to play. Highly recommended.
