Abra Academy is set in a school of witchcraft and wizardry, very much like the famous British one that houses a certain wizard boy and his friends. In this game unfortunately, you’re not a wizard prodigy but merely an assistant to Wanda, who is trying to graduate from the academy of Abra.

There are plenty of objects that you’ll have to locate which are ingredients for Wanda’s potions. At the same time, your levels are different locations in the Academy, so you’ll get Wanda acquainted with her new school, so to speak. You won’t be able to move on until you’ve found all the items in all the locations of a level. A cauldron will keep track of how much time you have left, and if you’re stuck, you can release pixies who give you hints to where the objects are hidden. You can earn more pixies in mini games later on, so no worries once you’ve used all of them up.

I had some trouble understanding the visual feedback in the game initially because it was so subtle. If you click around randomly too quickly, a gargoyle appears out of nowhere and sprays green stuff on your cauldron. I figured he was trying to douse the cauldron’s fire, but I didn’t know until many random clicks later and my fire fizzled and went out. There were some item names that were slightly confusing, such as drumsticks (are they for the musical instrument, or the one from a chicken?).

What I must say I love about this game is its great looking graphics. Unfortunately, some of the levels are just too congested; they look like a tornado had just swept through the room! Who knew that witches were such slobs and messy people? I understand that the developers are trying to make the game more challenging, but it sometimes gets frustrating to find out the item you’re looking for is partially obscured by something else. However, the countdown timer is so long that it allows you to take all the time you want to go get a pedicure, come back and still make it through.

If you have kids who enjoy hidden object games, they’d probably go gaga over this. There’s enough intrigue and mystery surrounding witches and magic to get their attention, and they’ll be able to keep themselves occupied clamoring all over the screen trying to find the items.
