Not all casual matching games need to reinvent the genre. Sometimes all you need is a simple game with a small file-size that keeps you amused for a few hours – and Heroes of Hellas is exactly that. The basic matching is a “drag your mouse over matching tokens” mechanic much like Luck Charm Deluxe or Magic Match, but with a hexagonal tileset, instead of grid-based. This makes it easier to see potential matches, but also limits the directions to 6 instead of 8 – making your selection sets smaller.

As you have come to expect, there are bonuses aplenty – and as you play you will find them more and more essential. After 30 minutes or so, Heroes of Hellas is as much about the bonuses as the base mechanic. But this is fine, as the bonuses are well done and have truly wonderful visual effects. In fact, the visuals across the board are excellent – especially the backgrounds which are rich and animated. There is also a puzzle-like subgame where you piece together images which you can then load to your desktop, if you are into that kind of thing. The games are fun, though.

Heroes of Hellas does have a story – it has Zeus and some Greek gods – but we’ve pretty much forgotten it already. You’re likely to do the same a few hours after playing. But it’s no big deal, you’ll likely spacebar through it anyway. The truth is, the game is just fine without the story, so you’re likely to be more impatient and ready to play the next level than interested in reading the story anyway.

The basic message here is that it’s an innovative matching game done extremely well. We’re pretty sure if you download it, you’ll play it to the end of the demo – so you better get started. Go take a look.
