Bird watching is hardly a common hobby if, like me, you live here in the tropics. It’s rather hard to camp out in the sweltering heat waiting for just the right bird to come along. To top it off, in the midst of the humidity are hordes of lecherous mosquitoes feasting on your body. Therefore, Large Animal has done us all a great favor by going one step up to bring bird watching right onto our screens with Snapshot Adventures - Secret of Bird Island.
You can sit back, relax and still enjoy what this game offers. You don’t have to be an enthusiast of our feathered friends to enjoy this game. The story of the game tells of your grandfather, a renowned naturalist who mysteriously disappeared. Following in his footsteps, you trace his disappearance throughout the country, meeting all sorts of different naturalists and photographers along the way. Each one will require you to help them capture pictures of different birds which then will be added to your portfolio.
What’s so interesting about this game is the amount of different bird types packed into it. Different locations in the game not only look different, but they have species of birds. In-game characters will offer you photography tips to improve your shots from time to time and as you progress, more and more gadgets will be added to your inventory to help you take better pictures as well. Some of the gadgets like the bird seed for example, help you ground the birds and capture specific shots of them eating and such. The challenge comes from being able to get good quality shots while the birds flit around and simply refuse to stay still.
One of this game’s best features is the sound. After playing this game for a while, I actually forgot that my headphones were on! Every chirp and twitter was so rich; and when coupled with the rest of the environment sounds is as close to nature as you can get. The birds are wonderfully detailed and so nicely animated it made “photographing” them really rewarding as well. If you’re proud of the shots you took, you can just as easily mail those shots to a friend. Although they’re not exactly real, the 3D rendered birds could’ve fooled me at first glance.
This game really gets mileage from its fun rewards system, where the information about the mystery of your grandfather continues to unveil as you improve in your photography skills as well. The game will take you from coast to coast and each location unlocks more and more birds. You can even create and name your own bird species if you feel like it. This game deserves a shot if you want to try something new.
