Indie Monday

Full Article

Cameron Sorden

It’s Indie Monday again, and we have three exciting games from companies you may not have heard about. These are all really great games, and you should definitely have a look. Indie development is where you’ll really see the risks and the creativity, so remember to support the little guys. This week we have two different kinds of brick breakers and an action space game for you. Check ‘em out!

Tropic Ball by Ten Games
This game is really a breath of fresh air with all of the arkanoid/breakout clones that are bouncing around these days. It takes the same standard formula, but instead of breaking blocks, you’re destroying 3D beaches in a variety of settings. Break crates, burst open treasure, knock down tribal spears, and catch crabs that scuttle towards you bearing power-ups. Really an original idea. [Website]

Deep Ball Defender by BD Studio
Another brick breaker, but don’t be fooled. It’s a very exciting one! If the matrix were an arkanoid clone, this is what it would be like. A really cool feature is that powerups work together, unlike most breakout clones where getting a new power replaces the old one. In other words, if you get fireball and then multiball, suddenly you have a screen full of fireballs. It’s very exciting and chock full of explosions. [Website]

Astrogeddon by ORT Software
Remember that old black and white game Asteroids? You’d turn your ship in circles and try to avoid asteroids that you were slowly breaking into chunks. Now imagine that game with breathtaking graphics, slick controls, literally dizzying background scenery (it feels like you’re really in outer space), weapon upgrades, a health meter, and enemy bonus ships to shoot, and you have Astrogeddon. Explosions galore and action up the wazoo. Definitely one to try. [Website]

That wraps it up for Indie Monday! We know that explosions and destruction aren’t for everyone, so be sure to check back in two weeks when Indie Monday will return with a few titles you’ll probably find more creative and industrious. See? Have some fun satisfying your destructive side this week, and then next time we’ll let you rebuild with creativity. It’s very symbolic… or something.
