Flash Friday: Hardcore Flash Edition

Full Article

Nick Kojima

Today we look at the deeper side of flash games. While you may be inclined to believe that flash games are only capable of a few minutes diversion, we big to disagree. There are some people out there doing very immersive stuff in flash, and we want to show you some of it. So, join us as we dive into the deep end of the flash pool.

Warlords: Call to Arms
Developer: Ben Olding Games

The game is simple and yet incredibly complex and deep for a flash game. There are two levels, a strategic map and a tactical map. The strategic map looks a little like Risk – choose where you will attack and attack. This brings up the tactical map, where you choose how to fight by sending out your troops against the other forces. They are pretty simple guys who walk forward and kill. The strategy is in a “rock-scissors-paper” style design, where certain troops are more effective than others. As you play, you can buy access to new troops, etc. Very solid, deep design - and a very rewarding gameplay experience. Go check it out. [Play]

Protector
Developer: Undefined

Though it seems like just another tower defense game, it doesn’t take very long to see that there is a lot more to this game than meets the eye. Set in a beautiful magical environment, this game is almost as much Dungeons and Dragons as it is Tower Defense. Not only is there a strategic map showing where the next levels will take place, there is a complete leveling system for your mages, special abilities, spells, and other fun stuff. You can get sucked into this game for a very long time if you’re not careful. We suggest not being careful and letting it happen. It’s worth it. [Play]

Talesworth Arena
Developer: Sean Gailey & Miguel Rojas

This game may not have the best graphics in town, and it certainly wins no audio awards, but it’s strangely addictive. Basically it’s an RPG fighting system with everything but the fighting removed. Pick your weapons, go in the arena, and duke it out by clicking on your weapons as they are available. Sounds simple, but once you start buying new objects and really getting into the character generation and improvement… it gets pretty deep. They get special bonus points for dedicating the game to Gary Gygax. That’s a classy move, and we miss him, too. Thanks for making a game he’d have enjoyed. [Play]
