OK, this week, we give you three games with balls. By that, of course, we mean the real balls, not the figurative ones. Interestingly enough, all three take a very simple, single game mechanic based on interacting with spherical objects, and make a completely different game from it. Good stuff. Now let’s get to the games.
Shuffle Snake Bites
Developer: Wild Snake Software
Very similar to marbles, the basic goal is to use the red ball to knock the other balls off the table without shooting the red ball off the table. The dynamic is clean and beautiful, and the visceral feel of pulling and releasing the little ball is very attractive. The designers have created a number of various challenges and puzzles around the placement of the balls and a number of blockers. A solid game without a lot of frills based on very classic gameplay. Good stuff. [Play]
Filler
Developer: SimianLogic
We’re big fans of simple, one-dynamic gameplay. Filler is a perfect example of this kind of understated, beautiful design. The basic idea is to fill the space with big white balls, while avoiding an ever-increasing number of small white balls. That’s all there is. And it’s wonderful. Go. Play. [Play]
TriggerBall
Developer: gamedev+studio.de
It’s like pool without pockets… and more interesting balls. Line up your shot, and make your ball hit all of the balls on the table, in any order. Helpful lines show you where your balls have been, and generous extra lives keep the game from being frustrating. The level designs get more intense as the game continues, but the levels are never so hard that you get too upset. Quiet, thoughtful gameplay. [Play]
