Flash Friday: Facebook Edition!

Full Article

Luna Cruz

We’ve got a special Flash Friday for you today - it’s Facebook Friday! The social networking site Facebook has just launched its new design, and with it a slew of both old and new games (some of which pit you against your friends). Take note that you’ll need a free Facebook account to play any of these.

Burdaloo
Developer: Pretty Good Games
This new game at CasualCafe looks straight out of a Pixar animated short. Burdaloo is a sliding Match-3 game, but instead of jewels or tiles, you match cute little animated Burds. Special Burds and usable items add depth, though the game is easy enough to be relaxing. You can compare your score with your friends or the rest of Facebook, but there’s no multiplayer at the moment. (Heads-up: While you can keep playing for free, the later levels are unlocked only with purchasing CafeCredits.)

Word Challenge
Developer: Playfish
In this adorable word scramble game, your goal is to form as many words within a group of 6 letters before time runs out. You can compare your score with your friends, or have a Challenge game where you try and beat each other’s score. With cute rankings, a Bonus Round that lets you find your friends’ names in a word, and a really easy-to-use interface, it’s no wonder almost 2 million users play this actively every month.

Scrabulous
Developers: Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla
If you like Scrabble but can’t wait until the next family reunion to find players, try it on Facebook. Scrabulous lets you play against a friend, leaving words for each other in turn. It follows Scrabble rules, with double and triple-word tiles and a bonus if you use all 7 letters. If you’re worried your skills won’t match up against the 1.2 million active users on Facebook, you can practice against a computer for free at Scrabulous.com.

Didn’t that get like totally busted for ripping off Scrabble? I thought they took it down, but the link still works. Anyone know the story on this?

Hi Scrabulous?!,

Here’s the story on that: Hasbro filed a lawsuit against the developers of Scrabulous, and while the suit is ongoing, Scrabulous has been taken down in North America and Canada. (My bad - I’m not from there, so I and the rest of the world can still play Scrabulous to our heart’s content.) Hasbro has also created an alternative game on Facebook (called SCRABBLE, still in Beta, and also available only in North America and Canada) so fans of Scrabulous can move there. However the Scrabulous fans are pretty hardcore, and have been e-mailing Hasbro in protest and posting heavily online.

You can read more about the news and protest here: http://www.new.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=3052170175#/topic.php?uid=3052170175&topic=6535. Meanwhile, we at Casual Review will keep reviewing games that we like, and try to stay out of the firefight :)
