Since this came out so quickly on the heels of the great Grimms Hatchery from Aveyond, we tried for *minutes* to come up with a “which came first, the Hatchery or the Chicken Chase” joke, but decided to give it a rest. You can thank us for that later.

In any case, as the title leads you to believe, it’s a game about chickens. Chickens and eggs in fact, as you do your best to run a successful egg farm. The mechanics are trivial to learn, and we were strangely surprised by the appeal of this game. At first it seems almost too simple. Click on the ground to feed chickens, collect coins, and click on eggs to collect them. Pretty straightforward. But then there are new chickens, and new kinds of eggs, and you have to start deciding: Do I collect or hatch the eggs? Do I want more breeders or roosters? And then you are hooked.

The graphics are simple, bright and appealing. The chickens look good running around, and it’s certainly fun to see them scatter and run when you throw feed at them – which is why petting zoos are cool, I guess. That and trying to feed strange things to goats… The music will get old pretty fast, but since you don’t really need the sound I’m sure most people will turn it off and just listen to their own music anyway.

There’s really not much more to say about the game. It has all of the stuff you have come to expect from a game: Bonus pickups, new improvements to the farm to buy, ravens that swoop down and try to grab your chickens, some fun little subgames, powerups, etc. Nothing here will blow your mind, but all of it together makes for a really appealing experience that is a pretty good sample of where casual games are at these days.

The only major thing lacking is some kind of story or character other than the chickens themselves. Sure, the game doesn’t really need any kind of story to be much fun, but having something more involved might have made the game have a little more personality, and convinced me to really play beyond the first hour. As it is, the vast majority of people will likely find that anything beyond the first hour is more or less more of the same. But we could be wrong. Download it and check it out.
