I was a bit indignant when I was first asked to review LEGO Chic Boutique, solely because I’m a girl. I grumbled about not being some silly “girly girl” who loves anything in bright colors and dreams of trips to the mall.

Seriously, who was I kidding? From the moment I saw that my first step was to customize an avatar to look kind of like me, I was hooked.

Snap2Play’s LEGO Chic Boutique is a fabulously girly game. You work for the best boutique in the world and you’re looking to expand. You pick a city from a list of ten possibilities, such as Barcelona, New York, Milan and Tokyo, and you open shop. In a basic Match-3 set-up, you drag the rows either up and down or left and right as far as you need to make a set of three identical items. As you make matches, you collect parts to create necklaces, hairbands, rings, combs and other dazzling items.

The Match-3 board is on the left side of the screen and on the right side is your boutique. Customers arrive with an item in mind, and if you have enough of that item in stock they’ll buy it and be on their way. So you have the added task of keeping an eye on your inventory and making sure you have enough of every item to satisfy your customers’ desires.

Reaching your daily earning goal gives you bonus points which you can spend on boutique customization. You can paint the walls, carpet the floor, hang pictures and mirrors, add seating, display cases, lamps, and employees, all of which add to the customer’s experience, making them more likely to buy something, and earn you more money. Once you’ve worked your way from a simple jewelry cart to the best boutique in your first city, you move on to the next, as you spread your reasonably-priced and stylish jewelry around the world.

Despite its girly fun, this game can get a bit repetitive. You do get new items to create, but that doesn’t really involve anything different on your part. Certain items require more pieces than others, but that just means you have to make more matches before you can create that item. There really isn’t any story in the game; you’re just working toward the goal of expanding the boutique chain. The music is fun and upbeat, but nothing special.

But as any chick flick lover knows, the story isn’t what’s important. What’s important is having a good time and being a strong woman. And jewelry never hurts.
