The premise: you belong to a group of people called the Zombie Smashers and your job (coincidentally) is to smash zombies. Lucky for you, they don’t seem to stay down. Isn’t job security nice? So you’re back on the job of smashing some zombie brains.
The action starts off with you going into a nightclub taken over by the undead. After defeating the boss at the end of the nightclub, you get more clues and your search for how and why the zombies are coming back continues. This story continues until you discover what is going on, and who is behind the madness. In the game, one of the settings that is turned ‘on’ by default is the blood setting. If the sight of blood makes you squirm then you will want to turn this setting off because there is a lot of blood. And I mean a lot.
The game consists of you going around killing zombies, collecting money, going to stores around the game, buying different food and other items such as tattoos, and continuing the search. There are several different items in the environment that you can use as weapons when fighting the undead. These items range from hammers to swords to heads of dead zombies. There is plenty of blood and fighting, so the action is never dull.
Each level has its own music. From what I can tell it is all completely original so that works out very nicely. The music for the most part is what I consider an indie grundge or heavy metal; they fit nicely with the overall theme. The game does have a story, so that is a nice addition even if it is fairly linear.
The trouble that I have is with the graphics. They’re not very consistent. The game actually uses some nice reflective effects; fog, disco lighting, and other impressive visual tricks. But the individual characters that you control or that serve as the people who live in the town or are zombies are not up to the same visual standard. While it might be an attempt to stylize the game on the part of the developer, it falls a little flat. If you’re going for a certain graphical style, you should apply it consistently or it doesn’t work.
Graphics aside, the overall game is fun, if challenging, and finding all the different weapons and upgrades is a good time. However, if graphics are really important for you to enjoy a game then you may want to take it for a test spin first, and get a feel for what the game has to offer. What have you got to lose? Get smashing!
