Do you long for the platformers of yesteryear? Do obese plumbers and golden rings bring a tear to your screen-strained eyes? Pizza Panic might be just the game to scratch that itch then, with enough old-school platformy goodness to brighten the day of even the most jaded gamer.
There is a lot of good that can be said about Pizza Panic. The sound effects are great and give you a good sense of being there. The presentation of the game is top notch, and the controls are spot on. Even the optional joystick support adds to the overall experience. This game forced me to really get nitpicky with areas that it needed to work on. I do think that the music can get pretty repetitive, but the same can be said for most of the great platform games I can think of.
In the game, you play a pizza delivery boy who happens to ride a skateboard. It’s a side scrolling platformer similar to the original Super Mario, and you can jump varying heights by clicking on the left mouse button and duck by clicking on the right button. You go to different streets and deliver pizzas for the best pizza shop in town, while avoiding (or killing) cats, birds, fish, dogs, and all manner of opponents.
The game is fairly large, and you unlock different areas as you collect stars. You gain stars from finding a special chili pepper on each level, getting all of the money from each level, and collecting all of the items that are strewn about the different levels.
All said, anyone who enjoys platformers ought to give this game a try. Animal lovers might feel a little guilty while they skate on the heads of their fuzzy friends, but the tight controls, nice sound effects, and plenty of delicious pizza-packed content are sure to get you over any moral tough spots. Besides, how often do you really get to see the plight of the lowly pizza boy?
