You’ve probably played Bingo before, right? It’s a great time! You sit and track scores on your card, trying to spell out bingo, and you win cool prizes. Except… it takes so long. You’ve probably also tried a slot machine at some point. Thrilling! Exciting! But over so quickly… What if somebody could combine these into some weird and really fun game? Well, they have. Welcome to Funkitron’s Slingo Quest.
In Slingo Quest, each level provides you with a card full of numbers, like in Bingo, and your goal is to fill five in a row as many times as you can on the card before you run out of turns. This is called a “Slingo”. You start with 20 spins in the basic game and each time you spin you’re given 5 random numbers that you have to match to your numbers on the card (which is where the slots aspect comes in). Some or none of them may actually be on the card. Along with numbers, there are a plethora of special things that can come up on your spins, including wildcard jokers, gold coins, super jokers that can go anywhere, and other stuff that affects the game. After 20 spins your total points are tallied.
That’s not all there is though. Funkitron had the foresight to add tons of small features which give Slingo Quest lots of replay value. First, each individual level in the story mode has four minor objectives to complete along with the point requirement, and you can replay the levels until you make them all. Next, secret keys can be found within the levels that can unlock special stages. Also, there are 12 stamps you can earn for doing exceptionally well. Finally, the last level of each island (the level subsets) throws something new into the mix, like giving you a giant scorecard to fill.
It’s a very cute and compelling game, but my one complaint with it is that it’s very random. There’s some skill involved in filling the card, but it really amounts to what numbers the game rolls up for you. This may put off some people who are more used to games dependent on their own skills for victory. On the other hand, it’s kind of refreshing to play a game where you can just sit back and enjoy the ride once in a while.
If you’re any kind of a gambler, or if you’re looking for a quick and simple game to pass some time, Slingo Quest will be a whole heap of fun for you. Even if you don’t fit that bill, give it a try. It’s simple and cute, and you might find a passion for Slingo you never knew you had!
