Remember alphabet soup? If you do, then you probably also remember happily spelling out words with your letters until your mom told you to stop playing with your food and eat. Well, you better call her and scold her. Those skills you carefully honed are going to pay off big time.
As far as gameplay goes, Word Krispies doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel too much. It sticks to the tried and true formula of giving you letters and letting you spell words. Simple and hopelessly addictive for all of us bibliophiles and spelling champs. It’s still pretty creative, though. You use alphabet cereal to spell out words, and each turn you don’t use a letter it gets soggier. If they get too soggy, they dissolve and you lose a life. Each set of levels has a theme with special cereal power-ups, and the regular power-ups are fun and frequent. Expect to see multiplier-marshmallows, bonus fruit, and crispy nuclear cereal bits on your adventure. Making long and complex words also snags you swanky letters that stick with you until you use them, even across levels (and they never get soggy—avoid eating them).
It’s the little things that really make the game stand out, though. If you’re stuck, just pick up the spoon and play with the letters until inspiration strikes. They swirl around like real cereal and even leave marshmallow trails in the milk. The music is pleasant and there’s a cheery plot. There are mini-games to play between each level, too. I particularly enjoyed playing hangman.
But as you know, no game can be perfect, and this one has its faults like any other. I generally prefer the keyboard for typing in words, and while the game supports that, some levels tend to penalize you for not using the mouse. It’s awkward to go from the keyboard to the mouse so you can click on the bonus fruit in time. Several of the mini-games are much easier with the mouse too unless you’re really comfortable with your letter layout on the keyboard. Also, another problem is that Action mode might be a bit too hard for most people. Letters getting soggier each moment is extremely challenging unless you can think on your feet and type like mad, and forget about using the mouse here.
Luckily, those concerns are minor gripes and don’t really detract from the quality of the game. If you’re into word games, you’ll find Word Krispies to be a very pleasant experience with a fun and quirky spin. Even if you’re not, try it out for the trip down memory lane. It’s not every day you get the chance to play with your food again.
