Totem Quest
Posted by Marcus Albers on April 30th, 2008 in Reviews

I’ve always liked games that have a twist. Aloha Solitaire is solitaire with a tropical twist. Scrabble Blast is a word search with a Scrabble twist. These games are the ones that break out of their respective genres and become something more. Totem Quest is match-3 with a twist, in more ways than one.

Hi there, I’m Christopher Natsuume, Creative Director of Boomzap. As you may or may not know, the Casual Review site is hosted at Boomzap, and some of the writers are Boomzap designers. Lately, Boomzap has completed another game, Zen Fashion, and we’re very proud of it. It should be showing up on a lot of [...]

Today, a special themed edition of Flash Friday. If you haven’t played any of the tower defense style games yet (and if so, what on earth have you been playing?), we’re here to help, with the three best flash-based tower defense games we know of. Hidden Mysteries: Civil War
Posted by Nick Kojima on April 21st, 2008 in Reviews

I really wanted to like this game. Since the explosion of the casual game genre in 2005, there has been a sort of deeply held belief that the only people playing casual games are soccer moms and grandmothers. But statistics show quite clearly that a good solid third to half of the casual game audience [...]

Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier
Posted by Poh Tun Kai on April 16th, 2008 in Reviews

Have you ever gotten a dreadful feeling while you’re playing a game demo that you’ve had just too much fun, and you’re worried that your time is about to run out? I got that feeling about forty minutes into playing Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier, just around the time I managed to build up [...]

Sprill - Mystery of The Bermuda Triangle
Posted by Poh Tun Kai on April 14th, 2008 in Reviews

The fox cub Sprill is probably the least likely hero I’d expect for Alawar’s underwater-themed casual games, yet Sprill – The Mystery of The Bermuda Triangle is not his first appearance! Sprill first appeared in a very different kind of game, the marble shooter Sprill Aqua Adventures. This time around, there are no marbles to [...]

Flash Friday Returns!
Posted by Nick Kojima on April 11th, 2008 in Features

We have had a lot of requests to bring back the infamous “Flash Tuesday” – and because we were looking for an excuse to play some more flash games anyway, we’ve decided to play ball. However, we have decided that the best time to play Flash games is likely at work on a late Friday [...]

Bloom Busters
Posted by Poh Tun Kai on April 9th, 2008 in Reviews

If you thought that all farming games are alike, Bloom Busters is out to prove you wrong. Most farming and gardening games have a customization element where you buy upgrades and build up your farm, giving you the sense that you are managing your own farm. Not Bloom Busters – this game is a garden-themed [...]

Amazing Adventures: The Lost Tomb
Posted by Nick Kojima on April 7th, 2008 in Reviews

Ok, let’s be honest. Amazing Adventures: The Lost Tomb is just another hidden object game. You will find that 99% of the design shares much with the other 5 million casual hidden object games released in the last year, starting from Mystery Case Files almost two years ago now. And that’s enough to make a [...]
