The Odyssey: Winds of Athena
Posted by Cameron Sorden on October 25th, 2007 in Reviews

A goddess’s work is never done. “Blow the wind, Athena!” “Guide the currents, Athena!” “Save us from that monster, Athena!” And sure, they give you offerings, but do they ever say “thank you”? Of course not! But at the end of the day, you know they’re grateful, so you do it anyway.

Word Krispies
Posted by Cameron Sorden on October 24th, 2007 in Reviews

Remember alphabet soup? If you do, then you probably also remember happily spelling out words with your letters until your mom told you to stop playing with your food and eat. Well, you better call her and scold her. Those skills you carefully honed are going to pay off big time.

Alien Outbreak 2
Posted by Nick Kojima on October 23rd, 2007 in Reviews

With graphics and sound that might have been truly impressive about decade ago and basic space-invaders style gameplay that you’ll recognize from your Atari 2600 days, it’s hard to understand exactly what the retro allure of Alien Outbreak is, but it’s there. Perhaps it is the strangely epic quality of the game sessions, which are [...]

Mahjong Escape Ancient China
Posted by Nick Kojima on October 22nd, 2007 in Reviews

Look - another Mahjong game set in China! Who could have seen that coming? Apparently the demand for these things is bottomless. That being said, Mahjong Escape Ancient China is more tastefully implemented than most with sharp graphics, beautiful backgrounds, and traditional music that fails to irritate.

Sparkling diamonds, mystical Aztec relics, fine ivory carvings, and piles and piles of beautiful, glittering gold as far as the eye can see. In short, treasure! And it can all be yours, if you’re hungry for adventure. Just don’t expect to be fighting swordfights, gunning down naval ships, or drinking rum in this bold little [...]

Aquaball

It’s another ball shooter. And it’s underwater. So at some level, you have seen this before. But don’t let that spoil your fun, because the developers knew all of this, and went out of their way to make this a fresh and original underwater ball shooter. I guess they like a challenge.

Zzed
Posted by Nick Kojima on October 20th, 2007 in Reviews

This game has been lingering on the shareware boards and independent game sites a long time. It maintains it’s presence with a loveable sort of naiveté and fresh design that you just can’t help but like a little bit, even if the whole premise of the game is patently ludicrous.

Zulu Gems
Posted by Nick Kojima on October 20th, 2007 in Reviews

Another beautifully crafted little gem from KatzGames. Like Boomzap’s Jellyboom, this is obviously inspired by the Japanese “Puzzle Fighter” games. However, Zulu Gems offers some compelling twists, including a very immersive African jungle expedition theme and a number of interesting special blocks. For people who have never played these games before, you must match blocks [...]
